Meaning: Words of a prison cell:
The world abandoned me, a mass of stone, leaving me only tears and curses. Under cruel Kamsa’s wrath, I wept and suffered day after day. Would He ever change my fate, this prison despised by all?
Then came Krishna, pure and divine, the flute player who would rule my heart.
Like an unwavering flame in the darkness, He appeared before me, radiant with joy. Devaki carried Him within her womb; I cradled Him in my arms of stone. She was the mother who bore Him, yet was I not a mother too, equal in love?
When Krishna’s feet touched my cold stone floor, the prison became a temple. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of Yamuna River
Ganga rests upon Shiva’s crest, blessed with the highest honor. I was jealous of Ganga’s fortune of touching His matted locks and looking at my winding journey across the earth. Believing myself unworthy of touching His matted locks, my heart withered in sorrow. Was I, Yamuna, so undeserving of His divine presence?
Then, as Vasudeva anxiously carried the Supreme Lord across my swollen waters, the footprints of the demon-slayer pressed upon me! In that single, fleeting moment, every sorrow born of never touching Shiva’s hair dissolved.
Across the earth, may Ganga be celebrated for her fame, holiness and grace. I, too, have received a blessing beyond measure. To bear the touch of the Supreme Lord’s feet - That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a serpent
Humans hunt me down, striking and chasing me, terrified of the venom I bear. The world curses my kind as poisonous, but does it not know the reverence Krishna holds for our venomous hoods? Is it just to despise our entire lineage as the lowest of all beings?
When Vasudeva crossed the ocean-like waters of the Yamuna, one of our own rose above Him, spreading his hood as an umbrella to shield the divine child. And upon the fierce Kalinga’s head, Krishna’s lotus feet danced!
Remembering the boundless grace bestowed upon our kind, my heart grows calm. The very feet of radiant Krishna, whose touch we were blessed to receive, lifted our entire lineage from disgrace. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Dialogue between a flower and a bee
Hidden beneath a veil of leaves, you entered my home and stole my sweet honey. Bewitched by Krishna, whose face shines like the crescent moon, you swarmed toward this tempting nectar.
Was it not He who closed His eyes and stole the precious butter from our pots? Was it not He who came as the Lord and stole our hearts with the gentle curve of His smile?
Those who bow at Krishna’s feet find the sins within their hearts cut away. He alone can effortlessly lift every burden we carry.
O wandering bee, tell me, is the honey you struggle to steal from my home truly sweet? Have you tasted the nectar of devotion, the honey that grants liberation? Have you known the supreme blessing of Krishna, our Madhava?

Meaning: Words of flattened rice (poha/aval)
They soaked me through long nights of darkness, then roasted me in the fire until I burned. Day after day, they pounded me with pestles, crushing me into flakes upon the earth. People passed by and mocked me, calling me a tasteless scrap that no one would ever desire. I wept, wondering why I had to endure such relentless torment.
Then Krishna’s hands touched me and drew me close. His fragrant lips tasted me as though I were nectar itself! With joy, He bestowed countless wealth upon Sudhama.
Was all my suffering on earth merely the path that led me to the Lord’s glory? I, once scorned as aval, flattened rice fit for no one’s desire, became the humble offering that brought boundless grace to Sudhama. Now the world remembers me for the good I have done. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a Banana Peel
He created me to cling to the fruit, a humble companion whose purpose was to protect what lay within. Yet when the fruit was offered to the Lord, they stripped me away and cast me aside. I had guarded the fruit like a suit of armour, only to become garbage in a single moment.
Then, in Hastinapura, Minister Vidura hurried to share his love with Krishna. Lost in the depths of devotion, he forgot the fruit itself and offered Him the peel instead. But noble Krishna understood the love behind the offering and ate the peel with delight!
His sacred lips, which grant liberation to all who seek Him, accepted even me, the part the world had cast away. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a bear
I am no lion, ruling the forest as its king. I hunt no prey like the tiger, nor can I scheme like the fox or deceive like a trickster. I have no dog’s loyalty to boast of, no monkey’s skill to leap from tree to tree. What worth do I have in this world?
Believing myself powerless, I grew weary and fell at His feet in surrender. Yet Krishna, in His boundless grace, accepted me and showered me with His compassion. He took Jambavan’s daughter as His bride, making me one of His own kin!
Who could have imagined that one so insignificant would be blessed with such a bond? Through His grace, the world now speaks of us with reverence. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a broken chariot wheel
I was born of wood, shaped by a carpenter’s hands, and fastened to a king’s chariot. Across the battlefield, I raced like a stallion, through clouds of dust and storms of blood. Arrows rained down around me until, at last, I was struck and shattered into pieces! Broken and helpless, I bowed my head and cried, “Hari! Hari!” praying that my jivatma might be set free.
And then, a wonder beyond all telling! For the sake of His devotee, Krishna forgot His vow never to take up a weapon. With His lotus hands, the Pure One lifted me and hurled me through the air, spinning me like the mighty Sudarshana Chakra!
By turning a broken chariot wheel into a weapon, He upheld Bhishma’s devotion and revealed to the world the depth of His love. Even I, a wounded and forgotten wheel, was blessed to feel the touch of Krishna’s hands. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a poisoned arrow
I was steeped in poison, bringing death and destruction wherever I went. Frightened creatures met my sharp point and perished. The world cursed me, calling me cruel, deceitful, and sinful. Yet, deep within me, a longing for devotion stirred. With that yearning in my heart, I clung to Krishna’s peerless feet.
Moved by His boundless mercy, Krishna allowed even one as wretched as me to rest upon His sacred feet! Would the world now condemn me for bringing down the Lord, majestic as a mighty elephant? Yet, through His grace, He chose to take me along with Him to His supreme abode, Paramapadam.
Who could have imagined that one who had caused so much suffering would receive such a blessing? Clinging to the holy feet of merciful Krishna, I found the refuge I had never deserved, yet was freely given. That is my greatest penance and my eternal blessing.

Meaning: Words of a poet
Did not the prison walls feel the touch of Your lotus feet? Did not the waters of the Yamuna receive You in their embrace? Even the ignorant bear and the venomous serpent were blessed by Your grace. The broken chariot wheel and the poisoned arrow, too, found a place close to You. O Krishna, do You not know the suffering I endure in this world? Do You not see the trials that weigh upon my soul?
From the prison cell to the poisoned arrow, You have granted liberation to all who clung to Your lotus feet. Each, in their own way, found refuge in You. When, Madhava, will that day dawn for me? I cling to Your twin feet, asking for but one boon: let me be born no more. Free me from this endless cycle of birth and death. Release me from these untold miseries and lead me to eternal freedom.Grant me Moksha, my Madhava. Let Your mercy be my final refuge, and Your holy feet my eternal home.
